At least the new theme song doesn't make my ears bleed. That's something.
So. The upcoming TMNT cartoon. It's actually going to be a thing. And we've got a clip of our heroes training here. The boys in action in an in-show setting! Sneak peek at what we can expect! Yay!
My thoughts? Eh... okay, look, my personal rule is you give the show a chance to show you where it's going before you pass judgement. Five episodes or so, say. Maybe even a whole season in certain cases. But after watching this, I'm starting to have my doubts. The animation style is... trendy, wherein 'trendy' is some corporate office's idea of What The Kids Are Into These Days after a few focus groups. There are some anime influences on display, which is fine in and of itself, but I'm not sure how well it works with the CGI. But like the Animated art style did, it might grow on me as time goes on. I'm more worried about the characters themselves.
First and most important: Raph is kind of coming across as a bully in this, isn't he? I mean, it's not enough for him to beat Donny, he has to break his property and humiliate him along with it? Look, I'm an only child and maybe I don't know how it works, but it seems like there's a line between 'we're brothers, we give each other hell, it's how we relate' and outright bullying, and Raph's crossing that line in this. Compare that to the first movie, where Raph challenges Casey Jones to a fight because Casey was being a bully. I liked that Raph. Can we have him back?
Actually, it seems like we're seeing all the Turtles' worst sides in this clip. Raph's a bully, Leo's kind of a one-string banjo, Mikey has the annoyance factor turned up to 11 and Donny... seems to be there to get beat up on. I was wondering if that was actually by design - maybe we're going to get some character arcs! Mikey will reveal Hidden Depths! Raph will learn to not be such an asshole! Leo will crack a joke once in a while! Donny will be Badass! Wouldn't that be awesome?
.....And then Splinter shows up. And we see where Raph gets it. *hands!* (Though it must be said this is a much more healthy-looking Splinter than we've seen before. He's definitely been taking his glucosamine pills. And using conditioner.)
Also, the animators are waaaaay too in love with the spinny weapons thing. They're ninjas, guys, not baton twirlers. Just saying.
I'm still gonna watch it, you understand. See you at the end of the month. *salutes*
