i can't even give this a title b/c spoilers

It really was a lovely old church.

Sephiroth stood in the aisle for a moment, caught up in watching how the light streamed through the windows. It must have been spectacular to see this place in its prime, when the city above had yet to block out most of the sun...

A sharp breathless noise pulled Sephiroth back into present awareness, and he looked towards the back of the church (past the flowers, Odin wept, it wasn’t just a dream) just in time to see a disappearing flicker of pink and auburn. “Wait,” he called, and started after the figure.

He skirted the flowers, instinct or memory warning him away from trampling them, and went through the same doorway she had. He knew she was lying in wait for him before he even stepped through, but he still blinked in startlement when the end of a staff swung right for the bridge of his nose. It hit his knuckles instead, hard enough to sting.

“I’m not here to hurt you,” he told its wielder.

Aeris Gainsborough, the last remaining Ancient, rallied quickly. “If you’re here to spout nonsense about the Promised Land, you’re about six years too early.”

“…well, that answers that question,” Sephiroth said. At her incredulous look, he clarified, “You do have knowledge of the future.”

“…what?” Aeris pulled away, her staff held protectively across her body, and Sephiroth didn’t chase her. “How - do you know? Why now?

Something about that ‘now’ shook Sephiroth to the core. “I only started knowing less than a year ago,” he said, but Aeris shook her head, and he knew that ‘why at this point in time’ wasn’t what she’d meant.

“…how many times?” he asked, almost dreading the answer. How many times have you died on my sword?

The Ancient shook her head again. “…I lost count,” she whispered, and the words nearly sent Sephiroth to his knees.

obsessed with the implications of Aeris & Sephiroth with future knowledge, sorry not sorry >_>
