D'awww, my first Pokemon fic.
You may all blame
dark_puck for this. Note that I'm using 'Noire' for my female PC character's name. Also note that I'm far too lazy at this time of night to do the little tickmark over the 'e.'

Cheren and Noire of second grade class A sat in their usual spot on the low garden wall, little feet swinging free of the ground. Cheren had his nose stuck in a thick book, like always; Noire was scribbling industriously in her battered notebook, like always. Nearly identical frowns of concentration furrowed their brows as they shut out the entire world to delve into their respective pages.
"Whatcha readin'?"
Cheren didn't even seem to register the question until an insistent little finger poked his knee. "Whatcha readin'?" the interloper, the new kid in the class no less, repeated when he lifted hazily surprised eyes from his book.
"...It's a book about myths and legends from Sinnoh," he answered without enthusiasm, and dropped his gaze to his book again.
"That's cool," Bianca chirped, not at all bothered by Cheren's manner. She transferred her attentions to Noire as Cheren sank back into blissful, bookish oblivion. "Whatcha writin'?" she demanded.
Noire was quicker to answer, having learned her lessen from Cheren about the futility of resistance. "It's my Pokemon list," she answered with less overt irritation than Cheren had shown - as the new kid, Bianca was less likely to make fun of either of them. "I'm trying to figure out the perfect team."
"Can I see?" Bianca asked brightly. Noire shrugged and turned her notebook around so Bianca could see, but kept a firm grip on it. "Samurott, Serperior, Mienshao," Bianca read out slowly. "Bisharp, Sawsbuck, Mew... What's a Mew?"
Noire took her journal back, snapping it shut protectively. "A new Pokemon they discovered somewhere. I read about it in a magazine."
" 'Pokemon Geographic,' " Cheren put in without looking up. "And they found it in the rain forest."
"It's pink," Noire added defensively, lest her girliness quotient be judged unfavorably again.
Bianca lit up. "I love pink Pokemon! I want one too!" she declared breathlessly. "Come on, let's go look for one!"
She grabbed the legendary Antisocial Twins by their wrists and tugged until her determination overcame intertia and gravity and they both slipped to the ground. Cheren hitched his book up to his chin; Noire tucked her journal under her arm. They glanced at each other, communicating nothing but a shared wariness tinged with amusement that was reassuring to see in each other's faces.
"Come on, come on!" Bianca urged, tugging their wrists again. With a shared shrug, Cheren and Noire allowed her to tow them off into a Grand Adventure.
