OC Meme, 18
I'm still behind, I know, but I'm not doing two of these multiple-character posts in one night.
OC #18, The Dragon Damsels [TMNT 1990-ish]
Formerly members of the Foot Clan’s ‘afterschool program’, now the best rock band you’ve never heard of, the Dragon Damsels are four girls working their asses off to find success and rebuild their futures. Think if Jem and the Holograms could do ninjutsu. ;) They meet the Turtles during the climatic battle of The Avengers, which (unusually for this list) I am intermittently working on writing. The bandmates are:
Misja: Front girl and lead guitarist. She’s the driving force behind the band, and pretty much the only extrovert. She joined the Foot when her family basically disintegrated due to property destruction, economic downturn, and the possibly-spurious arrest of her older brother. She’s the only one of the Damsels who has regular contact with her family, and thus is able to act as her friends' emotional safety net of sorts. Even more than the others, Misja dreams of their band hitting it big, or at least becoming an Internet sensation, and works tirelessly to promote it. She also creates most of the art for their promo material.
Tarani: Bass guitarist, powerhouse vocalist and one of the band’s lyricists along with Kierra. Tarani’s been homeless since she was eight, and used to sing on street corners and in parks to earn money for food. She’s very smart, but her education’s the spottiest out of all of the girls and she’s working hard to catch up. She’s also probably the most dangerous one in a fight - none of the others had ever really been in a fight before joining the Foot, but Tarani’s been fighting since she could walk. Tarani loves performing with the Damsels, but she's probably the one who most dreams of a 'normal' life, with the security that entails.
Kierra: Keyboardist, lyricist along with Tarani, and the den mother/Sailor Jupiter of the group. Kierra’s the one who deals with the venue organizers and bar owners on behalf of the band - Misja might be the one who makes friends easiest, but Kierra is a master at diplomatic wrangling. This, unfortunately, is the result of being brought up by a “pillar of the community”-type narcissistic control freak of a father. Kierra’s dedication to the band is made just a little bit shaky by her fear that her father will be able to track her down if they get too famous; also, the fact that she’s the only one who didn’t grow up in various stages of poverty means she sometimes sticks her foot in her mouth re: their shared finances.
Betsu: Percussionist. Her real name is Bethany, but the Japanese guys the Shredder imported to train the youngsters had trouble pronouncing it - it came out sounding like “betsu ni,” which is Japanese for “not particularly.” Betsu thought it was hilarious, so the nickname stuck. Betsu was raised by a single mother who was ill-prepared to deal with an autistic daughter, and she ran away to keep from (as she thought of it at the time) burdening her mother further. Learning martial arts has proved an effective pallative for Betsu, but she still risks losing her words or even melting down if she gets overstimulated. Her bandmates have various ‘contingency plans’ in place for that, depending on the situation, and with that structure in place Betsu is able to meet the world on her own terms.
