awake-at-5-AM headcanon, do not take seriously

because I'm probably the last person on Earth who still cares about this character. XD

Headcanon: Spike Witwicky is actually just as much a child genius as Chip and Carly. The reason we never see him attending high school is that he already graduated.

- he and Chip actually met at some kind of science camp for Gifted Youth, which is how a guy who works on oil rigs is buddies with a teenage quantum physicist.

- on the subject of oil rigs, Spike was on that oil rig in the pilot ep because a) he was taking a gap year or two between high school and college, knowing there's probably a free ride for him wherever he chooses to go (this is the 80s where that shit still happened, sigh) and b) Sparkplug, being working class to the bone, wants Spike to have some hands-on experience with Hard Work In Less Than Stellar Conditions before he goes off to one o' them Fancy Colleges, and Spike being very close to his father, let him talk him into it. The legality of all this is probably best left in Handwave Territory.

- the reason we never see him doing Child Genius things in the show* is because Spike's area of expertise is more in the sociology/politics/People territory rather than science or engineering, and that's harder to make a toy commercial about, and

- being blindingly intelligent is no defense against committing acts of utter dumbassery, see 'blithely carrying Soundwave into the Autobot base' and 'playing football with the Dinobots.' A real high INT, low WIS kinda guy.

*there is that thing where he makes an electromagnet out of junk that one time, but I get the impression that was a fairly common 'science kit for middle schoolers' type of thing back then, so that doesn't really support my argument. XP

Agreeing that this is a good headcanon, and his specialty being in sociology/politics/people things fits in well with season 3 where he's got a role as an ambassador.
