not sure if this is ever going to see the light of day in a fic or if it's just part of the iceberg

...so I'm back replaying TotK (because the red army's kicking my ass and it's all i have the brain for) and I just did one of the labyrinth quests. The labyrinths have always fascinated me because they hint at a pre-Zonai (or at least pre-Rauru&Sonia) culture, and because of the way they're thematically linked (ha) to the Typhlo Ruins, which I'm thrilled to get to see in daylight.

Anyway - the Evil Spirit Set, renamed from the Phantom Ganon set in BotW for obvious reasons. The PG set is just a DLC set that you find lying around and clearly isn't meant to be considered canon, but the ES set actually has a place in this Hyrule's history. It's also clearly patterned after OoT's Ganondorf (b/c Nintendo knows what butters this franchise's bread), but just as clearly, it's not that!Ganondorf's original armor. Ganondorf doesn't wear that horned skull mask thing, it's not even really a reference to boar form Ganon, and weirdest of all it fits Link perfectly.

Okay so I guess possibility 1 is the thing that TotK opens the door to with the Ancient Hero's Aspect, that of cross-species reincarnation. No one seems to know what the fuck the Ancient Hero is supposed to be, I think the most common theory is that it's Rauru's and Sonia's kid or grandkid but it doesn't really resemble either of them or a mix of the two. It's possible that the AH's species are just a pre-evolution of Hylian, like the Kokiri to Koroks or Zora to Rito, but that does fly in the face of the official timeline if that's something you care about. So all I can think is that the AH was a non-Hylian Hero, possibly the one from - eh, let's call it the Sheikah Era, from BotW's 10k years ago as I've seen some people speculate, and he's from a species that existed in Hyrule back then and doesn't anymore. WHICH MEANS (she said, dragging this long diatribe back on track), that it's also theoretically possible for Power to reincarnate as something that isn't a Gerudo King, and the Evil Spirit Armor belonged to a Hylian Ganondorf-like figure, possibly contemporary to the labyrinths, which I've always maintained were built as prisons and were therefore logical places to stick evil artifacts.

Possibility 2, my first thought, has even less canon support but is interesting to think about - what if Power isn't always the corrupted aspect of the Triforce? (Or maybe not the ONLY corrupted aspect, idk.) I think I've seen this idea before, maybe on tumblr - the idea of this whole hero-princess-villain cycle not always playing out the same way every time, and there potentially being Hyrules where it was Power & Wisdom vs. corrupted Courage, or Power & Courage vs. corrupted Wisdom. It's always stuck with me. What if this is evidence of a cycle with a corrupted incarnation of Link, who'd menaced an early Hyrule with necromancy (b/c Bone Weapon Powers, Stal enemies being peaceful) before the fall of the Zonai or potentially before the arrival of the Zonai?

Does this have anything to do with why the boar, heavily thematically linked with Ganon/Corrupted Power/Evil, seems to be honored on equal footing with owls (Wisdom) and dragons (Courage... I guess?) in the labyrinth civilization? Maybe Power isn't always the bad guy, or wasn't at that point in time? It had to be after corruption was introduced to the Triforce, this can't be just Some Guy due to the obvious Ganondorf design references.

idk guys I'm suddenly consumed with mad curiosity and wondering what a fic along these lines would read like.

I have never not called them the Typhlosion Ruins tbh.

I love all of these ideas and would read the hell out of your story.
