I'm not actually sure where I'm going with this.
An image popped into my head of Leia being trained by Yoda, and then this happened. So, uh, have a Star Wars AU snippet.
"I can never turn my eyes away from the Rebellion."
Yoda pursed his lips, deeply displeased, but Leia had expected that. Yoda's displeasure was as omnipresent-oppressive as the damp swamp air and the swarms of biting insects, and she had learned to endure it with the same stoicism. She called on that skill now as Yoda gestured with his staff at her to pronounce his judgement: "If you value your station above your training, Princess, a Jedi you will never be."
"My station is-!" Leia's teeth clicked shut, and she forced herself to swallow the hot rush of stung pride. "My station," she repeated more calmly, "is a tool at my command. If I were to be stripped of it, it wouldn't change who I am or what I have to do."
"Mmm." Yoda's eyes half-closed in a way that made Leia's nerves prickle. "Why pursue you the Force, then? Another tool, it is? Another weapon in your arsenal?"
There was more than an accusation in Yoda's voice - there were hints of pain (no, anguish), anger, a dangerous hardness like the edge of a blade, all so subtle that Leia wondered whether she was picking it up through the Force rather than hearing it. She breathed, settling herself, choosing her words with infinite care in response to the unspoken, ominous warning.
"My social status - my position of political power, everything I symbolize to the Rebellion, these are important to me, but they are not me. The Force is me." She searched out Yoda's eyes. "My breath, my bone, my heart, and I never even knew it. I've gone all my life unaware of who I really am and what I'm capable of, until-" She shook her head. "I can't take another step along the path I've chosen for myself until I master this. Maybe when I do... my path will change."
Yoda still wouldn't meet her eyes, and Leia held her breath in quiet tension until, finally, the old Jedi chuckled. "Wiser than some ten times your age, Leia Skywalker, yet much to learn you have still."
"Well, maybe when I reach nine hundred years old, I'll finally manage to impress you," Leia retorted, but she couldn't hide her grin.
"Unlikely. Now back to meditation with you," Yoda scolded, bobbling the end of his stick at her; Leia chuckled as she closed her eyes.
