OC Meme, 10
TMNT was my first love and my first ‘fandom’, though back then the Internet wasn’t a thing so I had no one to share it with. It is also the source of my first OC, who will not be appearing on this list because I need to keep some dignity. With that in mind, meet:
OC #10: Lacey [Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003]
In the imaginary introduce-this-person episode, the Turtles meet Lacey when they come between her and her would-be muggers. They think it’s odd when she doesn’t freak out upon catching a glimpse of them, but hey, it’s nice to not be treated like freaks for once. They wish her well from under the manhole cover as she goes on her way. …then the camera pans down, letting the viewers catch a glimpse of the Foot uniform in her duffel bag.
Lacey is a dedicated member of the Foot, but not a very skilled one. Her timing’s just a little off, she keeps forgetting her katas, smacking herself in the face with her kusarigama, little things that keep her off-balance and keep her superiors ragging on her. And now she’s just been saved by her master’s sworn enemies. So she’s already feeling a little bit like a failure when she’s told her squad’s been assigned to turtle-hunting duty. Knowing she doesn’t have the skills to beat the Turtles after seeing them up close and personal, Lacey sneaks into Saki’s library and snitches a little study guide - something she hopes will give her an edge and forever elevate her above the Squad Washout status.
This… does not work out how Lacey hoped. Her small fire-jutsu powers, gained from studying her stolen guide, certainly look impressive, but ultimately only afford a brief distraction, one the Turtles easily overcome. The squad is routed and retreats, ignoring an injured Lacey’s plea not to leave her behind. Seeing her squad abandon her breaks Lacey’s loyalty: she drags off her facemask, stating that she may have fought as a Foot, but she’ll die as herself.
Turtles: …wait, what? We actually have to kill someone? This early in the season? This doesn’t seem right.
Lacey: … ._.
Eventually Splinter shows up and sorts things out. Lacey tells him a little of her backstory (which she won’t tell ME until I actually write fic for her, she informs me) and how she joined the Foot, though being only a grunt she can’t tell him anything about Saki that he doesn’t already know. Lacey agrees not to return to the Foot, though she has no idea how she’s going to live without their support - fortunately, Splinter is not without human contacts.
And thus, the Turtles gain another ally, albeit a rather shaky one at the moment. Lacey turns to a new chapter in her life - though she doesn’t stop practicing ninjitsu or studying the Elemental Path from her stolen guidebook.
