OC Meme, 26
I'm behind again. Well, that didn't last long.
OC #26: Laika [Marvel Cinematic Universe]
Yet another canon-tagalong for the Avengers movies, but in my head she also has her own origin-story movie, so it’s entirely possible that I could adapt her into some original fiction at some point. Anyway, Laika was living in a group home/asylum because the memory-processing section of her brain has been severely damaged, giving her both retrograde and anterograde amnesia. One day she wanders off the grounds and encounters a sapient bearded vulture (seriously, google these things, they’re amazing), who gives her the Memory Staff. As its name implies, the staff allows her to start remembering things again, as well as giving her the ability to work magic. As she holds it, she realizes that oh yeah, home is that way and heads back toward the group home - only to discover it engulfed in flames, cutting her off from her past.
And so Laika wanders the world, teasing more magic spells out of the Memory Staff and discovering how to use it. As long as she remains in contact with it, Laika can function like a neurotypical person; when she lets go, her memories start to fade, so she gets a tattoo of the staff and the legend “If You’re Lost, Find This First” to help herself remember. She eventually discovers she’s a reincarnated völva, a seeress in ancient Norse religious/magical practice, and her powers grow strong enough to attract the attention of several interested parties, including SHIELD. Laika agrees to consult for them in exchange for protection from those other interested parties as well as their help finding her family. Hence, she meets Thor and (for a given value of ‘meet’) Loki, both of whom fascinate her given that her powers have Norse origins. Thor lets Laika pick his brain, but he doesn’t know very much about magic, and all he can give her are glimpses into what she could conceivably be capable of. Loki, for obvious reasons, is right out.
Originally Laika was going to be Dr. Strange’s apprentice at least briefly, but now I dunno if I’m gonna like him very much given who’s been cast as him. >_>
(Laika doesn’t discover this for a long while, but the reason her memory’s damaged in the first place is that one of those ‘interested parties’ discovered what she was and hypnotized her into drinking from an artifact called the Chalice of the Abyss, which would have given her incredible power if it hadn’t flayed her mind in the process. Not sure who this shadowy figure is or what they want; but the effects of the Chalice linger and may manifest in ways they can't predict.)
