Just once anymore I want to read a G1 fic without Megatron's IDW origin story leaking into it. I've yelled before about why I hate it, but in summary it does not fucking work with G1 Megs for a lot of reasons and it kills my enjoyment of what otherwise are some really well-written fics. Especially Meg/Op, which I love but IDW-leakage affects their relationship in profound ways that I do not love.

"But moogle, here is how you filter out the IDW tag!" you say. I already do that. The IDW leaks in anyway. -_-

"But moogle, hit the back button!" you say. I already do that. Unless I'm willing to block All Media Types, it leaves me with nothing to read. -_-

I just - I used to love all the different takes people had on things like Megatron's origin and the roots of the Decepticons because G1 didn't bother to flesh it out. "Here is a sandbox with some cool toys!" said the fandom. "Go nuts!" Now it's a plastic playset full of plastic dolls that only click together one way and I feel excluded. Which seems like a petty complaint for a series that gave us canon gay and trans robots and girl robots that were actually pretty cool, but fuck it, I'm petty.

TBH I think this is half the impetus for my Gladiator!Optimus 'verse (which I WILL write as soon as On Broken Wings reaches a reasonable conclusion, dammit). The end goal of that fic is basically their canon dynamic on Earth, so it's really just me yelling THE IDW ORIGIN IS NOT THE ONLY OPTION, PEOPLE, GDI.

Aw, no fun! *hugs* I actually have no idea what IDW Megs origin is off the top of my head, although I'd probably recognize it if I look it up (for my purposes I mostly just need a sufficiently bad bad guy here and there as to cause issues that require Protectobot snuggling, lol - I am a woman of single-minded tastes, or something XD).

If it makes you feel better, I actually never got all the fuss about IDW's take on TF? The comics are...okay. I still prefer Beast Wars.

I totally feel you on this. The invasion of IDW's take on things is one of the reasons I'm beginning to really resent IDW. And it's a real pity because IDW has some great ideas and I love exploring them, but now it really does seem that they are the be all and end all.

I feel the same way. Despite certain aspects souring the whole thing for me, there are aspects I would've loved to play with if it hadn't tentacled all over the fandom.

The great thing about TF is there are SO many continuities. Those continuities are not just about character physical design, but about who the characters are, what fills out each archetype. I like IDW but yeah it seems to be bleeding into every other continuity, but you're right, ESPECIALLY G1.

I'm not sure IDW Megatron is invading the G1 sandbox so much as he's an extrapolation of hints dropped in Beast Wars, Dreamwave Megatron, and maybe more obscure bits of Marvel G1 Megs? Also definitely, definitely TFP Megatron, who is almost the same guy.

.....? there really... weren't any hints dropped about G1 Megatron's origins in BW? and Dreamwave doesn't get a lot of attention anymore?

even if so, you can take hints from other sources and end up with diverse stories, which I'd be down with even if some of those stories aren't my particular cube of energon. I'm specifically complaining about G1 fic that takes "Megatron was an ex-slave who became a gladiator and then a revolutionary leader" from IDW as their canon, because (in my opinion) that particular origin story does not work for G1 Megs.

Gosh I can understand that. Canon bleed is so hard to filter out (and personally I feel that Optimus being a cop at any point is just wrong and a bad decision on the IDW writers' part) and it gets so frustrating! Because there's so many ways to play with it, especially with Transformers in general and G1 in particular!

you know, I don't see Coptimus bleeding into G1 nearly as often. It's more often his TFP archivist/librarian origin, though it doesn't mean we get to see G1'mus doing librarian stuff. (Shame, he'd be hot with glasses. ;) )

but yeah, G1 Optimus's working-class origins are so much of a better fit for his character either way.

Awww, my sympathies! It's always irksome when your fandom decides there is One True Canon and applies it everywhere - even when it's something you like, but especially when it's something you don't.

I'm going through my own version of this today, actually. I have been rereading a lot of Loveless fic, and being quietly annoyed by the way the anime version of their introduction is E V E R Y W H E R E. The manga is my only canon, and the anime directly contradicts it, so it throws me out of the stories! Because of course there's no labels for which version the author is working from.

Anyway, I hope you can find some non-IDW-infused fic somewhere to satisfy your need! Or at least feel spitefully motivated to churn out more words on your own fic. :D
