If I ever refer to this as 'Code of Hero,' slap me.

GDI, self. You do not need this kind of angst.

G1, early S3. Features Hero, the Autobot Basset of Doom, in his only non-comedic appearance to date. Srsly, this has character death and angst and sadness. Do not read if you have recently lost a pet. Or have a pet. Or have ever had a pet. Etc.

There were shrines to all of Autobot City's dead, here and there. Rodimus Prime himself had helped raise a few of them. Yet while all of the shrines were cared for to some degree, some of them saw more devotion than others.

"Hey, fella," Rodimus murmured, kneeling to greet the lone supplicant at the foot of Ironhide's monument. Hero lifted his head and whined, his tail thumping a listless greeting, and Rodimus gently caressed the hound's ears. They age so quickly, he found himself thinking as Hero rested his head against Rodimus's hand. Larger dogs aged faster than smaller ones, and Hero was a basset hound the size of a pony. Still, it seemed as though Hero had aged as quickly and unnaturally as Rodimus himself had. In the twinkling of an optic, Rodimus had a heavier body and new lines on his face, and Hero's fur was frosted with white and his eyes had clouded. "Time plays some cruel tricks on us," Rodimus offered with a sorrowful smile, "doesn't it, buddy?"

Hero's tail thumped again, but that, it seemed, was the extent of his socializing for the day. He closed his eyes and lay his head back down on his paws with a soft whuff. Rodimus stroked the noble head, recalling to himself times when he had played with Hero under Ironhide's watchful sensors. Those had been peaceful, carefree moments in the midst of an endless war. Now Rodimus shouldered the burden his elders had once carried, and Hero was the watchful one, waiting endlessly for the master who had begun the journey to rejoin the Well of All Sparks.

"I'm sorry," Rodimus murmured. "If it helps... I know Ironhide is waiting for you."

He had duties to attend to; with a final pat, Rodimus left Hero to himself. As he walked away, Hero summoned up the strength for one last heartbroken howl.

Four days later, the Autobot Prime caused a new monument to be built beside Ironhide's: a statue of a basset hound, head and tail pricked up in the alert attitude of a hunter, forever to watch over the Autobots at Ironhide's side.
