DEAR ABBY: It seems that everywhere I go, people expect tips. Yesterday, I pulled up to the drive-through at a cookie store, and before I paid or was handed my cookies, the clerk asked, "Would you like to leave a tip?" My niece recently told me that after she left a tip at a restaurant, the server followed her outside and asked if she hadn't been a very good server because the tip was small. I can give you more examples just from my family regarding their experience with tipping.

In this economy, I don't feel the 20% rule should apply. For the price of a lunch for two at a sit-down restaurant these days, the tip costs as much as a small entree. When I go through a drive-through, I don't feel I need to tip because I'm not inside using their facility. But if I don't, I get a disappointed look from the gal who gets paid to make and hand me my drink. What are your thoughts? -- TIPPED OUT IN IDAHO

The Silver Bullet, and Other American Witch Stories by Hubert J. Davis

A selection of folktales gathered in the 1930s. A number of people claimed to have been the actual victims, others to know the people involved. A number are just told without a connection. Two are recognizable fairy tales.

It has sections about how to become a witch, how they worked, how to counter them, and tales of their witchery for money or mischief. Many references to witch doctors (or white witches).

Scrappy Youngling: Overheard

Chopper had proven able to mostly work with Arseven, once they got back to the real ship that Fulcrum usually worked from. The sound of the two droids razzing each other became quite common, but Hera knew Chopper loved having another droid to talk to.

So did Arseven, who was one of those that had never been memory wiped.

Hera knew both of her new friends were veterans of the war, and it sometimes worried her because she'd seen the holonet. She knew what the soldiers had done… and if Fulcrum had been at Ryloth, that meant Fulcrum was one of the Jedi.

"He's safe," Fulcrum said, after Leverage had headed to the back of the ship to help the droids with maintenance.

"Did you read my mind?"

"No, your lekku language is not that far from mine." Fulcrum smiled. "Leverage saved me, when things happened. Now, we help others resist the Empire, and steal our men back as we can, because it wasn't their choice."

"How can someone do that without choosing it?" Hera asked.

"By using a chip to control them." Fulcrum stood to go lend a hand, and indicated the instrument display. "Keep an eye on the board, and call back if something changes badly.

"You need to get used to it all if you're going to be our pilot."

Hera's eyes went very large, as she realized Fulcrum meant those words. "I'm going to be the best pilot I can be!"

"I have faith in that, my young friend."

"You know she's Syndulla's biter," Leverage was saying, and Hera froze where she was, rather than get any closer.

"And? I didn't set out to recruit her; she made her own choices. He's never going to look off of Ryloth for his efforts. I don't have to worry about offending him."

Hera's heart hammered to hear Fulcrum say what she felt, and that the woman knew!

"Alright, 'Soka. You will do what you think is best. Still think she's young to make this kind of choice. It's not like when we were younger."

"No, it's worse. And we need strong-willed young minds willing to pick up the fight, keep it strong. I believe in her, and will teach her all I can."

Hera felt the belief and promise in those words. She very carefully took herself back to the cockpit, and vowed to never let Fulcrum down.

I've just changed my journal layout to Modular by [personal profile] branchandroot and I'm having issues putting a header banner in. I want it to show above the header box with the journal title, 'Latest entries' etc in - at the top of the page below the nav bar - but the CSS code that I know puts it in the header, in that box.

The CSS in question is

#header {
margin-top: 5px;
background-image: url('https://sharpiefan.dreamwidth.org/file/5524.png');
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-position: top center;
padding-top: 275px;
}

What should I change in order to position the header above that top box? (It doesn't look as if posting the image URL into the provided area in the Images area of 'Customise your theme' does anything at all, so that's not much help either.)

It's been a long time since I changed my journal layout, I'm willing to accept I might be missing something really obvious!

Back in August of 2025, we announced a temporary block on account creation for users under the age of 18 from the state of Tennessee, due to the court in Netchoice's challenge to the law (which we're a part of!) refusing to prevent the law from being enforced while the lawsuit plays out. Today, I am sad to announce that we've had to add South Carolina to that list. When creating an account, you will now be asked if you're a resident of Tennessee or South Carolina. If you are, and your birthdate shows you're under 18, you won't be able to create an account.

We're very sorry to have to do this, and especially on such short notice. The reason for it: on Friday, South Carolina governor Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina Age-Appropriate Design Code Act into law, with an effective date of immediately. The law is so incredibly poorly written it took us several days to even figure out what the hell South Carolina wants us to do and whether or not we're covered by it. We're still not entirely 100% sure about the former, but in regards to the latter, we're pretty sure the fact we use Google Analytics on some site pages (for OS/platform/browser capability analysis) means we will be covered by the law. Thankfully, the law does not mandate a specific form of age verification, unlike many of the other state laws we're fighting, so we're likewise pretty sure that just stopping people under 18 from creating an account will be enough to comply without performing intrusive and privacy-invasive third-party age verification. We think. Maybe. (It's a really, really badly written law. I don't know whether they intended to write it in a way that means officers of the company can potentially be sentenced to jail time for violating it, but that's certainly one possible way to read it.)

Netchoice filed their lawsuit against SC over the law as I was working on making this change and writing this news post -- so recently it's not even showing up in RECAP yet for me to link y'all to! -- but here's the complaint as filed in the lawsuit, Netchoice v Wilson. Please note that I didn't even have to write the declaration yet (although I will be): we are cited in the complaint itself with a link to our August news post as evidence of why these laws burden small websites and create legal uncertainty that causes a chilling effect on speech. \o/

In fact, that's the victory: in December, the judge ruled in favor of Netchoice in Netchoice v Murrill, the lawsuit over Louisiana's age-verification law Act 456, finding (once again) that requiring age verification to access social media is unconstitutional. Judge deGravelles' ruling was not simply a preliminary injunction: this was a final, dispositive ruling stating clearly and unambiguously "Louisiana Revised Statutes §§51:1751–1754 violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, as incorporated by the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution", as well as awarding Netchoice their costs and attorney's fees for bringing the lawsuit. We didn't provide a declaration in that one, because Act 456, may it rot in hell, had a total registered user threshold we don't meet. That didn't stop Netchoice's lawyers from pointing out that we were forced to block service to Mississippi and restrict registration in Tennessee (pointing, again, to that news post), and Judge deGravelles found our example so compelling that we are cited twice in his ruling, thus marking the first time we've helped to get one of these laws enjoined or overturned just by existing. I think that's a new career high point for me.

I need to find an afternoon to sit down and write an update for [site community profile] dw_advocacy highlighting everything that's going on (and what stage the lawsuits are in), because folks who know there's Some Shenanigans afoot in their state keep asking us whether we're going to have to put any restrictions on their states. I'll repeat my promise to you all: we will fight every state attempt to impose mandatory age verification and deanonymization on our users as hard as we possibly can, and we will keep actions like this to the clear cases where there's no doubt that we have to take action in order to prevent liability.

In cases like SC, where the law takes immediate effect, or like TN and MS, where the district court declines to issue a temporary injunction or the district court issues a temporary injunction and the appellate court overturns it, we may need to take some steps to limit our potential liability: when that happens, we'll tell you what we're doing as fast as we possibly can. (Sometimes it takes a little while for us to figure out the exact implications of a newly passed law or run the risk assessment on a law that the courts declined to enjoin. Netchoice's lawyers are excellent, but they're Netchoice's lawyers, not ours: we have to figure out our obligations ourselves. I am so very thankful that even though we are poor in money, we are very rich in friends, and we have a wide range of people we can go to for help.)

In cases where Netchoice filed the lawsuit before the law's effective date, there's a pending motion for a preliminary injunction, the court hasn't ruled on the motion yet, and we're specifically named in the motion for preliminary injunction as a Netchoice member the law would apply to, we generally evaluate that the risk is low enough we can wait and see what the judge decides. (Right now, for instance, that's Netchoice v Jones, formerly Netchoice v Miyares, mentioned in our December news post: the judge has not yet ruled on the motion for preliminary injunction.) If the judge grants the injunction, we won't need to do anything, because the state will be prevented from enforcing the law. If the judge doesn't grant the injunction, we'll figure out what we need to do then, and we'll let you know as soon as we know.

I know it's frustrating for people to not know what's going to happen! Believe me, it's just as frustrating for us: you would not believe how much of my time is taken up by tracking all of this. I keep trying to find time to update [site community profile] dw_advocacy so people know the status of all the various lawsuits (and what actions we've taken in response), but every time I think I might have a second, something else happens like this SC law and I have to scramble to figure out what we need to do. We will continue to update [site community profile] dw_news whenever we do have to take an action that restricts any of our users, though, as soon as something happens that may make us have to take an action, and we will give you as much warning as we possibly can. It is absolutely ridiculous that we still have to have this fight, but we're going to keep fighting it for as long as we have to and as hard as we need to.

I look forward to the day we can lift the restrictions on Mississippi, Tennessee, and now South Carolina, and I apologize again to our users (and to the people who temporarily aren't able to become our users) from those states.

While doing research on plague doctors, I recently found an old self-published book (this one here) whose author essentially drove around Germany while spending the night at various castles and taking amateur photos. The writing isn't great to begin with, and the book is filled with typos and formatting errors.

But honestly, I think that's charming. This one goth nerd's weird labor of love is worth an infinite number of AI-generated books with perfect grammar and stylistic organization. And let me tell you. Amazon sure is gloated with an infinite number of AI-generated books these days, many of which are travel guides filled with what I can only assume is hallucinated misinformation. I'm now starting to see AI-generated writing appear in academic articles as well, and I'm not feeling great about it.

As someone with ADHD who's been bullied for being "lazy" about my writing, I have to admit that this is actually kind of validating. Like sure, my work might have an occasional typo or mistaken homophone or awkward bit of phrasing, but at least you can be sure it was written by a human.

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

The Winter Olympics are underway in Italy.

Alongside the usual magnificent achievements, there was also controversy caused by Gus Kenworthy, a British skiier, though one who was raised in America and had competed for the USA in the past, leaving a less than subtle message about his about American current affairs. Aside from everything else, I admire his calligraphy in a challenging medium.

The Superbowl happened, but being neither American nor a sportsperson, I can't get worked up about the game and can only point you to the half time show with Bad Bunny (Which annoyed all the right people, especially when you read the disaster which was the "alternate" half time show with Kid Rock), and the movie trailers)

The Madalorian and Grogu got one which was more... vibes than anything else, though the voiceover did seem like it was about to recommend some sort of old fashioned farm product, possibly cheese or cured meats.

Supergirl featured an adorable cameo by everyone's favourite superdog as a puppy. As an aside DC are also sponsoring puppies for training as guide and service dogs, always a worthy cause IMHO, and the first puppies are appropriately named: Krypto, Clark, Kara, Lois and umm... Lobo?

"Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" told a story about what did, or did not, happen to Benjamin Sisko, in a sort of love letter to DS9 as SAM the photonic life form tried to find out more. The pacing and some of the story choices felt weird to me, even whilst acknowledging I am probably not a target demographic anymore. However, for a couple of the surprises we got, I'll forgive it a lot.

And in slightly on topic news, Jay and Miles of the long running XplaintheXmen podcast have announced the series will end at some point during this coming year. They will cover the Grant Morrison as their finale. As a longtime fan and commentator there, I will miss them, but am glad they are going out on their own terms, and on a run I've been looking forward to them covering (though I will miss them covering the Chuck Austen run, which I suspect would have been... entertaining)

Also, for those who are interested, they have provided some basic resources for those looking to get more involved in local activism (directly, or supporting) in their most recent post.

And adding in Sir Ian McKellen's magnificent recitation of lines attributed to Shakespeare from "Sir Thomas More", on the subject of the treatment of immigrants, which shows that some things never change.
