The North Crater - Jenova SYNTHESIS - and Sephiroth Himself. The final test of your strategy, nerve, and how many Turbo Ethers you've been able to hoard unless you're taking shameless advantage of the W-Item glitch. And...

Flew through it without breaking a sweat. :D

...yeah I might've done a bit too much grinding but I really wanted everyone to have a nearly-mastered HP Plus/MP Plus combo after all the TPKs I'd been eating and god damn if it didn't work. The Big Guard-Bad Breath-spam Beta combo carried me through to the final bosses, and then nearly-mastered Magic Plus+KotR pretty much wrecked Sephiroth's shit. For the final final battle, I let Sephiroth get a hit in so Cloud would counterattack, so even though I didn't fully adhere to 'no physical attacks' I did make good on 'no Limit Breaks'.

So, with the benefit of hindsight on this mad experiment, what have I learned?

1) As soon as you can, buy a second Lightning Materia - or at least anything but a second Fire. It's gonna make that cluster of Shinra Tower bosses + Motor Ball a lot less painful.

2) I never bothered with stuff like Sleep or Confu before, but they're a lot more useful in a magic-only run because magic doesn't snap the enemy out of it. Exploit the hell out of this. >D

3) On that note - Enemy Skill is going to be your best friend, especially late-game. High damage for relatively low MP cost, as well as access to useful stuff like Magic Hammer and Bad Breath. I basically had a party of blue mages and I don't regret a thing.

4) Unfortunately keeping up with weapon progression is still important, since your weapons affect your Magic stat. Which meant I was struggling for gil in parts, especially since some of the most useful Materia is eye-wateringly expensive. Idk, focus on your main party and try not to run from battles too much.

5) I did the Wutai sidequest for completion's sake but honestly idk if it's worth it for a magic-only run. It gives you access to some nice new weapons for that point in the game, but if you haven't recruited Yuffie yet then the weapon shop doesn't close, and you just have to wait until Disc 3 to go get Leviathan. The only Materia you get that you might not be able to otherwise is HP Absorb, which... y'know, ymmv but I never found that one very useful. Godo's fight in the Pagoda gives you a second chance to learn Trine, but that's about it.

6) ...but definitely get Yuffie, she and Vincent have the highest magic stats after Aeris. They're glass cannons, naturally, but for what it's worth they were my team in the North Crater.

7) Speaking of, there's no reason not to use Tranquilizers to induce Sadness on everyone, just for that extra boost in damage reduction.

8) Watch. Your. Max. HP. Learn from my mistakes.

And none of this is going to help me in my next run - I usually replay every couple of years, and next time I get bit by the FF7 bug I kind of fancy going No Materia. :D

Soooo remember when I said the gameplay was getting easier?

Carry. Armor. That motherfucker murdered me and almost did it twice, what with the knocking out one character and then crane-game-ing two. I know CA's considered to be one of the harder boss fights but I was loaded down with Lightning Materia and Trine and Ramuh and I felt like I could handle it.

I should've taken the hint then and there, and I definitely should have taken the even bigger hint when I started doing the Return to Midgar quest and a Behemoth one-shotted Barret from full health with Flare. But nope, I just kept bopping along without a care in the world until I ran into the Turks and they TPK'd me again.

The problem, for those of you who aren't familiar with the mechanics, is that equipping magic and summon Materia raises your Magic stat but lowers your max HP a little bit. It's not a big deal on its own, but when you're loading your characters up with all the high-level Magic and Summons you have by the late-game, it adds up. Sooo when you're doing a challenge run where you're relying heavily on Materia, and then you're running into late-game enemies and bosses, you're a bit of a glass cannon and the Turks have a hammer. :D

Look, I don't know what to tell you. I'm a bit slow.

I figured it out eventually, and Proud Clod and Hojo were much more manageable. Before I brave Northern Cave, though, I'm going to offset my too-much-Materia problem with more Materia and grind up an HP Up for everyone in my party. I've still got some sidequesting to do, though I haven't decided yet if I'm going to poke Ruby and Emerald. I beat them in my last playthrough so it's not like I don't have the bragging rights already.

Yet more trauma~! :D

The feels are real but the gameplay is getting easier. Got through Schizo and Jenova-DEATH with only a few Ethers apiece. Actually, now that I've got some decent MP under my belt and I'm packing guys like Bahamut, Odin, Leviathan and Kjata, I'm relying a lot more on summons for the bulk of my damage in boss fights. Which honestly? Makes for a nice change. In previous playthroughs I used them sparingly if at all.

I've got the Highwind now, which is great, but poor Cloud is MIA for the moment which is not great since he has the stats for Doin' The Magic whereas Tifa and Cid are... less gifted in that area. Sorry guys, maybe I'll be leaning on you more next time I get the FF7 itch and do a no-Materia run. :D

Anyway, time to start breeding chocobos. What should I name them?

Second TPK!

Well, two and a half. I let Yuffie get got because the guy on the first floor of the Pagoda knew Reflect and I hadn't thought to equip Destruct. XPPP But anyway, the real TPK was in the Temple of the Ancients, in the room where you get the Nail Bat. The Ancient Dragons were not impressed by magic, and I didn't really need the Nail Bat anyway so I decided to let that one go.

Overall I'm definitely feeling the crunch now. Between Rapps, Demon's Gate and Jenova-LIFE I nearly got my ticket punched multiple times. I'm having real trouble dealing enough damage and keeping myself in MP. Demon's Gate especially - I ended up having Vincent toss out Ethers every turn and I could still barely keep up with MP demand. The Pagoda was a struggle in parts, mostly with Magic and Omni being able to heal themselves (at my expense, in Magic's case). In the end I was only able to beat Omni once I finally managed to Magic Hammer his MP bar to death. I have a feeling this is going to be a strategy I repeat going forward.

That Scene has never gotten easier to watch, even after 25 years. Just putting that out there.

Sooooo I had my first TPK in the Shinra Mansion. :D

It wasn't Lost Number, to my shock - it was a near thing once or twice, getting the magic half in phase 2 is hard enough but then having to beat it with only magic is brutal - but the regular enemies that did me in. The Mansion is just plain hostile to magic users. You got:

1) Dorky Face - uses Silence
2) Jersey - switches between being invulnerable to magic and being invulnerable to physical attacks, and of course its default position is invulnerability to magic
3) Mirage - has Auto-Reflect
4) Ying/Yang - discount Lost Number, in addition to being just creepy as fuck

So it was unfortunate enough when I had to break my own rules to beat a couple of Jerseys, smacking them for minimal damage just to get them to switch to being vulnerable to magic. I should've run, really, but I'd just gotten their Enemy Skills and I had learned from painful experience with a Zolom that if you run away after acquiring an Enemy Skill it falls off your Materia. XP I took to just running from most encounters after that.

BUT THEN. On the way out I got the worst encounter - two Mirrors and a Jersey, attack from both sides. I was already low on MP because I was being a cheapass with my Ethers - which, can you blame me, I burned through six to get through Lost Number - but okay fine, I got set to smack the Jersey with Yuffie so Cloud could magic it to death and in the meantime I had Aeris take care of those mirror guys with Matra Magic and oh fuck they Reflect abORT ABORT-

...long time no see, Game Over screen.

Fortunately I'd run outside and saved after I beat Lost Number so I didn't have to suffer through that again, but I did have to repeat kicking Vincent awake and listening to Sephiroth be a smug bastard again. And my heart was in my throat a bit until I got back outside.

Sooooo compared to all that Mount Nibel was kind of a cakewalk. And there's lots of enemies to steal Ethers from so I was able to build my stock back up. :D

Next stop, Rocket Town~!

Got up to Gongaga over the weekend. Thoughts:

1) I came to regret buying an extra Fire rather than an extra Lightning Materia first chance I got. A lot of the Midgar bosses are weak to Lightning and there were times when one character couldn't really contribute because I didn't have enough useful Materia to go around.

2) I got through the initial stage of bosses taking a whole MP bar to defeat and it's been pretty smooth sailing ever since, but now that I'm at the stage where my attack Materia is starting to level up, I think I'm about to fall off a difficulty cliff.

3) I thought I wouldn't need to worry about this so much but it turns out I do still have to keep up with weapon progression. They do have an effect on your magic stat and the increasing number of slots is important. (Fortunately the game gives you an upgraded weapon for Barret before the Dyne fight so I wasn't stuck trying to fight him with the Assault Gun.)

4) You can steal Ethers from just about everything between Midgar and the Chocobo Farm. Too bad I only realized that after I'd crossed the marshes. XP

5) I went ahead and got White Wind and Mighty Guard as soon as I could but they're such MP hogs that I doubt I'll be using them much at this stage.

Documenting this for my own benefit more or less: I've started a Magic-Only Challenge Run for FF7. (Because I wanted to replay the game for fic notes but I wanted to make it a bit more interesting than just, y'know, playing the game again.)

I'm kinda making the rules up as I go. This is my first challenge run so I'm not being very strict with myself. Here's the rundown:
1) I can only damage the enemy with things that cost MP. So, Magic, Summons, Enemy Skills. No physical attacks, no Limit Breaks, no Commands that damage the enemy directly.
2) I can use items for healing purposes but not to damage the enemy, except in the Yuffie sidequest because otherwise I'd never get through it. XD
3) I can use Steal, but once it levels up to Mug I have to sell it and buy another one.

Anything else I guess I'll house-rule as it comes up.

I've gotten up to the Trail of Blood sequence using these rules so far, and it's been a bit of a nerve-wracking exercise in MP management. Since I can use Tents, the main skill is knowing where the save points are and what boss fights are coming up. I'm also doing a lot more running from battles, which is making things go quicker but might end up biting me in the ass when I'm underleveled later on. XD
