I'm trying to get back to actually getting through some of my video game backlog instead of just pootling around in TotK all year. (At the rate I'm going, I'll be in the nursing home with my nose in my Switch. I'm fine with that.)

SO ANYWAY. Sea of Stars. Fantastic game, holy shit. Spoilers for true ending. )

I say this every year, but I really do want to keep doing this after prompting ends. So many prompts I have ideas for, I just lack the energy. also I p. much want to fill all of my own prompts, which i guess makes sense, those are all concepts that speak to me or i wouldn't prompt them

FF7, Sephiroth/Dyne, rarepair road trip
Stardew Valley, Junimos, abandoned roadside attraction
BotW, Link, looking at the moon
FF7, Sephiroth & Zack, are you trying to give your father a heart attack?
BotW, Zelda, chronicle of wings

yeah, remember when I was complaining about the lack of emotional impact in the final-boss battles in Pokemon?

Yeah, uh, I beat the final boss in Violet last night.

I AM CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING SEVERAL EMOTIONS. o____________o

Y'know what, everyone's talking so much shit about ScVi's graphical issues, but I am going to say something nice about the visuals: ScVi's character design and animation is top notch.

Everyone's so much more expressive! Your character has more than two facial expressions and they look much more natural! Your character sitting on Miraidon/the other guy whatsisname is not a mess of limbs clipping through limbs! The way Iono flaps about practically swimming in her sweatshirt! The way there's a lot of diversity even within different Trainer types! And the way that Pokemon exist and move in the world, it just feels natural and normal and like they really belong there.

The bit where you throw the Pokeball in Tera Raids is just incredibly well done. The determined expression, the subtle distortion of the limbs in motion, the sense of both youth and strength. Just. Good stuff.

I feel like I'm counting down to the new Pokemon by continually shitting on Pokemon, which I'm sure isn't the correct way to be a fan of anything - wait what am i saying we're nerds we're eternally complaining lol

Ending spoilers for SwSh, along with just a butt-ton of complaining. )

Look, it's not that I dislike Ed Sheeran. He's not my favorite thing but he's fine most of the time. And it's not that I hate when industries get metaphorical chocolate in my metaphorical peanut butter. I went slightly feral when Florence + The Machine did the opening theme for FFXV.

It's just, Pokemon has always been an escape into a simpler world for me. It was a thing that Kids Like and Adults Hate and there was safety in that. Ed Sheeran (and Katy Perry, but i don't think anyone noticed when she released Electric) belongs to this world, which is exactly what I'm trying to forget exists, and it introduces some uncomfortable cognitive dissonance.

I just hope they don't start playing Celestial over some climactic battle or something, uuuuuugh.

Persona 5/TFG1 AU. The ‘I’ here is the player character i guess only in this version you get to choose your gender and aren’t limited to girls as dating partners, yes I am still salty about the whole no-queers-allowed business why do you ask

The palace is… mine? )

Me yesterday, nose in freshly pirated Pokemon Y: X/Y is my favorite gen because the Battle Chateau lets you beat the crap out of obnoxious rich people. 10/10 game of the century.

Me today, likewise: X/Y is my favorite gen because the Battle Chateau sees you entering into this world full of people who are, yes, spoiled and self-absorbed, but also desperately unhappy, and as you continue to battle them, your drive for money/XP pulls you deeper into their world, slowly eating away at your soul until at long last you reach the lofty rank of Grand Duke or Duchess and complete your transformation into one of them. 10/10 game of the century.

The North Crater - Jenova SYNTHESIS - and Sephiroth Himself. The final test of your strategy, nerve, and how many Turbo Ethers you've been able to hoard unless you're taking shameless advantage of the W-Item glitch. And...

Flew through it without breaking a sweat. :D

...yeah I might've done a bit too much grinding but I really wanted everyone to have a nearly-mastered HP Plus/MP Plus combo after all the TPKs I'd been eating and god damn if it didn't work. The Big Guard-Bad Breath-spam Beta combo carried me through to the final bosses, and then nearly-mastered Magic Plus+KotR pretty much wrecked Sephiroth's shit. For the final final battle, I let Sephiroth get a hit in so Cloud would counterattack, so even though I didn't fully adhere to 'no physical attacks' I did make good on 'no Limit Breaks'.

So, with the benefit of hindsight on this mad experiment, what have I learned?

1) As soon as you can, buy a second Lightning Materia - or at least anything but a second Fire. It's gonna make that cluster of Shinra Tower bosses + Motor Ball a lot less painful.

2) I never bothered with stuff like Sleep or Confu before, but they're a lot more useful in a magic-only run because magic doesn't snap the enemy out of it. Exploit the hell out of this. >D

3) On that note - Enemy Skill is going to be your best friend, especially late-game. High damage for relatively low MP cost, as well as access to useful stuff like Magic Hammer and Bad Breath. I basically had a party of blue mages and I don't regret a thing.

4) Unfortunately keeping up with weapon progression is still important, since your weapons affect your Magic stat. Which meant I was struggling for gil in parts, especially since some of the most useful Materia is eye-wateringly expensive. Idk, focus on your main party and try not to run from battles too much.

5) I did the Wutai sidequest for completion's sake but honestly idk if it's worth it for a magic-only run. It gives you access to some nice new weapons for that point in the game, but if you haven't recruited Yuffie yet then the weapon shop doesn't close, and you just have to wait until Disc 3 to go get Leviathan. The only Materia you get that you might not be able to otherwise is HP Absorb, which... y'know, ymmv but I never found that one very useful. Godo's fight in the Pagoda gives you a second chance to learn Trine, but that's about it.

6) ...but definitely get Yuffie, she and Vincent have the highest magic stats after Aeris. They're glass cannons, naturally, but for what it's worth they were my team in the North Crater.

7) Speaking of, there's no reason not to use Tranquilizers to induce Sadness on everyone, just for that extra boost in damage reduction.

8) Watch. Your. Max. HP. Learn from my mistakes.

And none of this is going to help me in my next run - I usually replay every couple of years, and next time I get bit by the FF7 bug I kind of fancy going No Materia. :D
